Holistic Massage

What Is Holistic Massage?

Holistic Massage, often called Therapeutic Massage, utilises a variety of relaxing, invigorating, and deep pressure strokes to loosen taut muscle fibres and release accumulated tension. Depending upon your needs, work on the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, or face, may be included in the massage. Therapeutic oils will be used on the skin to facilitate movement.

What Can Holistic Massage Do For You?

The primary benefits of massage are relaxation of the body, stress relief, and pain relief.  Regular massage has been shown to improve mental and physical performance,  improve sleep and the ability to relax, increase energy levels, and relive conditions causing pain.  Often regular massage improves these conditions so much that medication can be reduced or eliminated.  Evidence suggests massage can also help to reduce the physical and mental symptoms of anxiety and depression.

If you have pain - headaches, stiffness in your neck or shoulders, back pain, arthritis, repetitive strain injuries, joint injury, scoliosis, scars, pain from overexertion or stiffness from inactivity - massage can help you.

With regular massage the circulation is improved both locally and systemically helping to remove products of inflammation, and so help the body to heal itself. Tissue elasticity -  skin, fascia, muscle, tendon, and ligament - is also improved.  Both are of particular benefit where there is or has been injury. Pain and restricted movement from scars may be reduced with massage, even if the scars are years old.

What Should Be Expected From a Treatment?

The first consultation will include the taking of a detailed history, with  medical, lifestyle, and dietary information, in  order to form a therapeutic picture.  The massage will then use oils suited to your needs.  These oils will leave a residue on your skin, so please be aware of this when dressing for a day on which you will be having massage.

When Might Massage Not Be Suitable?

Holistic Massage does have some contraindications.  Persons with heart conditions, thrombosis, phlebitis, or oedema are urged to check with their GP's before making an appointment.  Additionally, persons with some serious conditions - including cancer - may not receive massage without the express consent of their doctors. If you are in any doubt or under medical supervision, check with your doctor before making an appointment.

It is not advisable to drink alcohol or use non-prescription drugs in the 24 hours before and after your massage.
